The Dark Root Joe Gunther Mysteries Book 6 edition by Archer Mayor Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really struggled through this book Somehow I never got interested in the greatly complicated story... About halfway I gave up and skipped about 40 percent and read the end. The problem with this book is that it has over 85 named characters, a dozen with Chinese names. Early books were. good. This is not.
The usual Gunther mix of local color, police routine, building suspense and action, near escapes from death. But here the focus on the politics of Gunther's situation starts to outweigh the rest, much to my dismay.
A first rate string of stories about a small town cop shop and a bunch of utterly believable detectives and their cronies. See my comments on several of the others - especially The Skeleton's Knee which was the first one I reviewed. The author knows his stuff first hand, and knows his territory too. Start with number one - Open Season and experience some of the best long-cycle character development anywhere in fiction. Mayor (and Gunther&Co) are treasures.

HCB in Vermont
I'm reading the books in order but you really don't have too. I've read nine so far and they keep getting better. The characters in the book are likable and the plot lines weave around the area of Vermont where they take place.
The Joe Gunther mysteries is one of my favorite series when it comes to police procedural books. This novel, in particular, was not my favorite. I think the author was engrossed in telling us what he had researched and in working with the Montreal police and not in giving an action novel as he usually does. I like the way Mayor describes the scenery and towns and actions. A person can see where the characters are and have a sense of the places. I will definitely read another Joe Gunther book.
"The Dark Root" is the 6th Joe Gunther novel. He is a central participant on a multi-agency task force which takes on Asian gangs which are fighting each other at the same time. You will need to track who is who in terms of the Asian characters (literally suggest you keep a list with pertinent notations), and there are many of them, with various names. If you are familiar with Southeast Vermont (Brattleboro area) and Montreal, Quebec, you will find yourself comfortable with the references. If not, I suggest you keep a map handy.

Vermont is about 96% white, with about 1% Asian. So, I was surprised that the book focused on Asians, but at the time the book was written, Asians represented the largest minority, albeit a small number, in Vermont. The action is fast paced and dramatic.

The reason I assigned 4 stars rather than 5 is I got lost from time to time with all the Asian characters.
The subject matter was very interesting - smuggling Chinese immigrants and drugs across the Canadian border. The leaders of these "gangs" brutalized everyone, mostly their own people. Illegals were treated as slaves as were local businessman. The problem with the story was Joe Gunther. He seems to live and work in slow motion waiting for all the "i's" to be dotted and the "t's" to be crossed. Perhaps in real life law enforcement that's the way it goes, but in an action thriller it doesn't play well.
